We provide a friendly, supportive community with no judgement for the adult ABSOLUTE BEGINNER who has always wanted to learn to dance.

CREATION OF GROOVE ZONE
Groove Zone was created in Sydney, Australia by Yolanda Thomas.
After teaching adult classes for over 10 years at the prestigious Sydney Dance Company, Yolanda realized something important — most adults who had never danced before were too intimidated to even walk into a beginner class.
There is a fine line between stepping outside your comfort zone and feeling completely overwhelmed. So how do you start when even “beginner” feels too advanced?
From this need, Yolanda created Sydney’s first Adult Absolute Beginner Hip Hop classes, specifically designed for people with little to no dance experience. Classes quickly sold out.
Through years of teaching, she identified 4 fundamental grooves that run through the foundation of hip hop dance. The Groove Zone method was built around simplifying movement, building confidence, and making dance accessible to everyday adults.
It wasn’t about teaching steps. It was about teaching GROOVE.
After relocating to Los Angeles in 2013, Yolanda expanded Groove Zone internationally, with instructors now continuing her teaching methods across both Sydney and LA.
Meet Yolanda Thomas
Founder & DirECTOR
Yolanda is the founder & director of Groove Zone, originally from Sydney, Australia. She has taught over 100,000 students in person and is known for delivering highly motivational, engaging hip hop dance classes for adults.
Yolanda co-authored several beginner dance articles for wikiHow, which have reached millions of readers.
Yolanda was featured in Camilla Franks’ Women of the World—a coffee table book celebrating 100 influential Australian women.
Performance coach:
Yolanda specializes in building confidence not only in dance, but also in vocals, performance, and stage presence. She is an award-winning vocalist, performer, songwriter, choreographer, and charting recording artist.
As a vocalist, Yolanda has performed alongside Johnny Depp and members of Guns N' Roses, INXS, and Pink. Her musical theatre credits include Grease The Arena Spectacular, performing to audiences of over 10,000 across Australia.
Choreography:
Her choreography & casting clients include DREAMWORKS TV (LA) & GOOGLE (Sydney).
She won Choreographer of the Year at the international BATTLEGROUNDS Hip Hop Competition for her work with junior crew STARTIME KREW.
She also choreographed and appeared in MTV’s Full Tank, coaching finalists from CLEO’s Bachelor of the Year.
Her national dance tours include performing as a dancer/rapper for COCA-COLA and joining REEL 2 REAL on tour during their hit “I Like to Move It, Move It!”

Our Adult Hip Hop Classes are for anyone 18+ who wants to move, groove, and gain confidence—without the pressure of keeping up with kids.
